La Rioja Alta SA is highly esteemed for their mastery in crafting exceptional wines in Spain. Their century-old tradition is perfectly showcased in their legendary 904 "Gran Reserva". This wine, which is highly esteemed among wine enthusiasts, is named after the winery's merger with Bodegas Ardanza in 1904. However, the first digit of the year had to be dropped in order to distinguish it from the vintage year. The philosophy behind the 904 is to create the best wine of the year, but not every year is able to produce a wine that can age for an average of 10 years before being released. The selection process for the 904 occurs only three times per decade and is not solely determined by the regulatory board. In some cases, La Rioja Alta SA may choose not to use the fruits of a particular year for their top wines, even if the regulatory board has declared it an excellent or very well qualified vintage.
